INFORMATION SHEET

About St Cyprien:

The town of St Cyprien is located in the Rousillon area of South West France, near the Pyrenees and by the Mediterranean Sea. The town is made up of three main parts:

St Cyprien Village

St Cyprien Town and Port

St Cyprien Plage (Beach)

St Cyprien Village

First inhabited by the Romans in 118 BC, the old village is picturesque with old houses and narrow streets and a traditional French feel. The village has a church, health centre, police station and a few shops.

St Cyprien Town and Port:

St Cyprien town is busier than the old village. The town has a variety of shops and restaurants that are easily accessed from the Plage area. The Port is the second largest, small boat port in the Mediterranean where you can see a variety of small boats and yachts moored. There are daily sailings around the Mediterranean coast to Spain from the Port area. In the summer months, there is nightly entertainment in the bars in the port area. There is a local market on Tuesdays and Fridays from early morning to midday offering an interesting variety of local foods, clothes and household items. The town also has a golf course and club which offers dinners and dancing. There is a large water park called Aqualand, and a go-cart track.

St Cyprien Plage (Beach):

St Cyprien Plage stretches for six kilometres and is white, sandy and clean. The beach is popular with families and sunbathers but is never so busy that you can’t find lots of  private space, even in the height of the summer season.

The sea is clean and warm and popular with bathers. It is safe to swim here and, in the summer months, the beach is patrolled daily by lifeguards.

In the summer months, there is a beach bar where you can hire loungers, windsurf, jet ski, or just cool off in the bar with a cold beer or cocktail.

Shopping for Food:

There are shops at the local Commercial within walking distance between the Plage and the Port where you can get everything you need. There is a bakers, butchers, fish shop, small supermarket, greengrocers, newsagents and restaurants.

There is a Casino hypermarket located at Canet and a Lidel and Intermarche supermarket in the village of Elne about 15 minutes drive away.

You can also fly into Barcelona, Girona, Carcassone or Montpellier airports and hire a car to drive to St Cyprien.

If you are not hiring a car, you can get a taxi from Perpignan airport to take you to St Cyprien. Please be aware that Perpignan airport is very small and taxis are only in the rank for a short time when a flight is due in. The taxi fare is approximately 60 euros.

Getting around St Cyprien:

You can easily drive around St Cyprien, although traffic is very busy in the summer months. The area is good for cycling as it is fairly flat and French drivers are considerate towards cyclists. There are also ample cycle pathways around the area.

The Little Train is a fun way to transport yourself around the Port and Plage areas. The train leaves every hour from the centre of the Port and runs through the port area to the Plage. There is also a free bus service that runs from the Plage to Aqualand.

Perpignan has a rail station where you can catch a train to other towns in France & Spain.

About the Surrounding Area:

St Cyprien is located in the Languedoc/Rousillon area. There is a lot of Catalan influence in the history of the area and the foods and wines. Perpignan is the nearest larger town and has a rich history. On summer evenings, there are often shows at the old city wall.

There are other interesting resorts around St Cyprien such as Canet, Argeles sur Mer, which offers additional water sports such as scuba diving, and Collioure which boasts a pub that has original drawings done by famous artists decorating its walls and a medieval castle.

You can travel up the coast towards  Montpellier, Marseilles, Nice and St Tropez – about a 5 hour trip, or you can go inland to Toulouse, and Carcassonne with its Roman castle. Andora  is about an hours drive away and Barcelona is about 1.5 to 2 hours drive across the Spanish border.

The Pyrenees are very close and offer interesting places to visit such as the wine caves of Banyouls. There are many caves around St Cyprien and a drive up the coast will take you through the vineyards of Minervois, Fitou and Corbieres.

If you like horse riding, there are riding stables close by where you can book a lesson.

Is St Cyprien for You:

If you are looking for a place with plenty of warm sunshine, where you can just relax do some sunbathing, eat good food and drink lots of wine – then St Cyprien is for you. St Cyprien Plage is primarily a holiday area frequented, in the main, by French families and couples. Most people speak French so you will need to learn a few words to help you in the shops and restaurants. St Cyprien Plage is great for children. They love the pool and the beach and the area is very safe.

If you are looking for a French equivalent to Aiya Napa or Ibiza, then St Cyprien is not the place for you. There are no big clubs or all night raves here. Night life in St Cyprien is based around the bars and restaurants and suitable for families or couples.
